Motherhood and Entrepreneurship Juggle: Find Your Balance

Ask Me Anything: Navigating Motherhood & Entrepreneurship (The Femmeprenista Way!)

Alright, let’s get real for a sec. Ever feel like you’re juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle… blindfolded? Just last week, I was minutes away from a crucial client presentation, slides prepped, killer outfit on (well, almost – one shoe was mysteriously missing, thanks to the toddler’s hide-and-seek obsession), when my meticulously planned schedule imploded. My six-year-old announced she needed a volcano model for her school project. Due tomorrow. Naturally. That’s pretty much the daily reality for many of us building a business while raising a family. And you know what? It’s okay to admit it’s tough! I’ve been there, four times over in fact (and with a PhD and a couple of lively Miniature Pinschers – Cappuccino & Espresso – thrown in for good measure!).

So, I opened the floor to your burning questions about making this crazy, beautiful juggle work. In today’s post, we’re diving into key strategies for navigating the messy middle of motherhood & entrepreneurship. This is a great resource for Foundation Builders who are just starting out and feeling overwhelmed by the juggle. Here’s the inside scoop, the behind-the-scenes look at the Femmeprenista approach, and some honest answers (no sugar-coating here!).

“How do you balance it all? (Seriously!)”

This is the million-dollar question, isn’t it? Short answer: you don’t. “Balance” is a myth. It’s more like a constantly shifting tightrope walk, and some days you’re going to wobble (a lot!). A recent wobble for me? Completely missing a deadline for a blog post because, well, life. The baby decided 3am was party time, the toddler decided breakfast should be a finger-painting session with yoghurt, & by the time I got to my desk, my brain was scrambled eggs. It happens, right?! We’re all human, navigating this beautiful chaos one step at a time! The key is to find your own rhythm, prioritize ruthlessly, and build systems that support your unique life. My research into Black female entrepreneurship has shown me that many women feel this pressure acutely, especially when juggling family responsibilities alongside limited external support. A key finding? Women who prioritize even small moments of self-care report significantly higher levels of productivity & resilience – a crucial insight for navigating these demands. For me, it means having strict boundaries around client-facing time (the kids are nowhere near those!) and then embracing the beautiful chaos in between. It also means accepting that sometimes deadlines get pushed back because, well, life. One minute you’re deep in strategic planning, the next you’re deciphering toddler language or cleaning up a “science experiment” gone wrong (anyone else relate?!). My biggest game-changer? Systems. And I learned this the hard way. There was a time, not so long ago, when my to-do list was longer than my arm, my inbox was a black hole, & I was constantly reacting to urgent requests instead of focusing on what truly mattered. I remember one particularly stressful week where I double-booked two client calls – a major face-palm moment that cost me not only time & energy but also dented my credibility. That’s when I realised a robust system wasn’t a luxury, it was a necessity. Think Trello boards, streamlined client processes, time blocking (including dedicated family time!), & my secret weapon – AI! Leveraging AI has been absolutely transformational for me.

* Try using an AI scheduling tool to automate your social media posts. This can easily free up 30 minutes per week!

* Explore AI-powered email marketing platforms to segment your audience & personalize your messaging effortlessly.

* Even a simple AI writing assistant can help you craft compelling marketing copy in a fraction of the time.

It’s like having an extra pair of hands (and a super-efficient brain) to handle those repetitive tasks, freeing up my time & energy for the things that truly matter – my family, my clients, & let’s be honest, a moment of peace with a cuppa!

“I’m overwhelmed. Where do I even start?”

I get it. The initial stages can feel like you’re staring at Mount Everest in flip-flops. Take a deep breath. You’re not alone! Many of us start our entrepreneurial journey during those intense early motherhood years, sometimes triggered by a specific frustration or “I deserve more” moment. For me, it was the corporate return-to-work dread after my third child, coupled with a pay packet that was shockingly misaligned with my efforts & expertise. Like, honestly, the salary didn’t match the effort I was expected to give! And that’s when you know there must be a better way, right?!

My advice? Start small. Focus on one thing: what’s the tiniest, most achievable step you can take today?

* Maybe it’s validating your business idea with five potential clients.

* Maybe it’s setting up a basic website (our Ready-to-Launch Kit can help with that!).

* Maybe it’s simply joining a supportive community of like-minded women who get it (hint, hint: Femme:Connect!).

[Link to: Femme:Connect Community Page (https://www.facebook.com/femmeprenista)] Don’t try to do everything at once. You’ll just end up with castor oil on the carpet (trust me!). My own “one small step” today? I’m finally blocking out dedicated time in my calendar for focused work, even if it’s just 30-minute chunks between school pick-up & dinner prep. One small, smart action every day is a game-changer.

“How can I build a business *and* be present for my kids?”

This is where mindset comes in. You have to ditch the guilt. You are not a bad mum for wanting more. You’re setting an incredible example for your children by pursuing your dreams. My own entrepreneurial journey, especially with my PhD and four little ones, has been a testament to this. Yes, it’s challenging, and I often feel like a tortoise in a race full of hares, but I’m showing my children that it’s possible to be a present and loving mum while pursuing a fulfilling career that makes an impact. It’s a windy path, and progress might be “slower” due to other commitments, but taking ownership of your journey and consistently putting one foot in front of the other is key. Remember Simon Sinek’s golden rule: “People don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.” Understanding your ‘why’ – that deep reason for wanting to build this business – is your fuel on tough days.

Practical Tip: Schedule dedicated “kid time” and stick to it.

* Even 15 minutes of fully focused play can make a world of difference.

* And let’s not underestimate the power of a bedtime story or an impromptu dance party in the kitchen – those moments matter!

“I’m struggling with imposter syndrome. Help!”

Imposter syndrome is the uninvited guest at every female entrepreneur’s party. It’s that nagging voice whispering, “Who are you to do this?” Let me tell you, I’ve wrestled with that voice too! My journey, from struggling in a primary school that wasn’t the right fit for me to finding my voice at UEL while raising my eldest daughter as a baby, taught me a lot about imposter syndrome. My father’s fierce advocacy, his habit of “shouting at teachers in their face when they’re telling me to shut up,” showed me firsthand the power of having a voice & how vital it is to use it. The key to silencing that voice is to focus on your wins, however small.

* Celebrate every milestone.

* Celebrate every client.

* Celebrate every pound earned.

And surround yourself with a supportive community (Femme:Connect again!) who will remind you of your brilliance when you forget. Remember, as Roxie Nafousi wisely says, “Energy doesn’t lie. Trust the vibes you get.”

“How do I find my ideal client?”

This is where strategic marketing & messaging comes in. It’s about understanding your audience deeply, almost like a detective! What are their biggest pains? What keeps them up at night? What are their deepest desires? Once you understand their world, you can craft targeted content that truly resonates and pulls them into your orbit. That’s where asking yourself questions like “What keeps them up at night? How do they really feel?” helps you connect.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Building a fulfilling business while raising a family is not for the faint of heart, but it is absolutely achievable. It requires a combination of clear focus, smart strategies, prioritised well-being, and the strategic use of AI. Motherhood & entrepreneurship – it’s a unique blend.

My hope is that these insights have provided you with clarity, encouragement, and a renewed sense of empowerment. Now, I’m curious: what’s one small, smart action you’re committing to taking this week? Share it in the comments below – let’s support each other on this journey!

P.S. Remember, you are capable of incredible things. Don’t let anyone (including that inner critic!) tell you otherwise.
