Reclaiming Your Return: Maternity Leave Entrepreneurship
Ditch the Corporate Ladder, Design Your Own Ascent: Reclaiming Your Return from Maternity Leave
Returning from maternity leave… Those words can evoke a whirlwind of emotions, can’t they? Excitement, trepidation, maybe even a touch of dread. If you’re a Foundation Builder heading back to a corporate setting, that might be particularly strong. You know that jarring feeling of walking back into a world that’s moved on without you. Projects reassigned, relationships shifted, & that nagging sense that your position, your hard-won place, has somehow diminished.
I get it. I’ve been there. Navigating the corporate world, even before kids, often felt like being a replaceable cog in a giant machine. And after maternity leave? It can feel even more stark. Limited flexibility, the constant pressure to “catch up,” & that gnawing feeling of being out of sync with your own life. Remember those mornings when you’re rushing around trying to get ready, only for your toddler to decide the perfect time to redecorate the walls with your favorite MAC Ruby Woo lipstick? Yep, trying to fit back into that corporate mould while juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood? It’s a tight squeeze, to say the least.
But what if there’s another way? A way to design your own return, on your own terms, without the constraints of someone else’s structure? That’s where entrepreneurship comes in.
See, building your own business isn’t just about creating a product or service. It’s about reclaiming your narrative. It’s about owning your time, your energy, & your impact. And for returning mothers, it can be the key to designing a return that truly honours both your professional ambitions & your role as a mum.
Reframing the Return: Autonomy vs. Diminishment
Think about it. In a corporate setting, the return from maternity leave is often defined by what you’ve *lost* – projects, connections, even a sense of belonging. But in the entrepreneurial world, the return is defined by what you *gain* – autonomy, control, & the ability to integrate your work seamlessly with your evolving family life.
My ongoing research into female entrepreneurship consistently highlights this shift in perspective. Women who build their own businesses aren’t just creating income; they are creating lives that work *for* them, lives where they call the shots. Take, for instance, one of my clients who, after years of climbing the corporate ladder, felt completely stifled by the lack of flexibility and the constant pressure to conform. She took the leap, launched her own online coaching business, and now sets her own hours, works from anywhere, and is finally able to be truly present for her family. They’re not asking for permission to balance their roles; they’re designing systems & structures that support both.
Honestly, I remember a time, pre-Femmeprenista, when I was wrestling with this exact dilemma. I was on maternity leave with my second daughter, also juggling my MBA. I remember one evening, staring at the piles of laundry and unopened business books, and wondering if I’d made a huge mistake. The thought of returning to my corporate job filled me with dread. The long commute, the inflexible hours, the constant feeling of being pulled in a million directions – it just didn’t fit with the life I wanted to create for my family. I distinctly recall sitting in the car park after an MBA class, utterly exhausted, thinking, “There has to be a better way,” This yearning for more autonomy and a better work-life fit became one of the key drivers behind Femmeprenista. In hindsight, if I hadn’t pursued entrepreneurship, I would have missed the opportunity to learn and grow alongside my partner as we navigated our PhD studies together – something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
That’s when the seed of an idea began to grow. What if I could create something different? Something that allowed me to use my skills & experience but on *my* terms?
That seed, nurtured by countless late-night brainstorming sessions (often with my toddler’s favorite sing-along show blaring in the background!), eventually blossomed into Femmeprenista. And what I’ve learned on this journey, especially now juggling four kids & my PhD, is that even when the path is slower, or even different, taking ownership is non-negotiable. “Hard work beats intelligence when it’s smart work” is something I say a lot, because it’s true! You might twist your ankle on the entrepreneurial path, but the difference is, you get back up again and find a way forward. As Myron Golden says, “To become the tree, you have to cease being the seed.” If I don’t get there, that’s my fault. But importantly, it also means if I DO get there, that’s my win. Pure and simple.
From Replaceable Cog to Indispensable Leader
This is where that shift in mindset, that Focus on owning your journey, becomes so powerful. In a corporate environment, you might be told (sometimes even quite bluntly!) that you’re replaceable. But as the founder of your own business, you are *indispensable*. You are the visionary, the strategist, the driving force behind your own success.
This sense of ownership is incredibly empowering, especially for mothers who are often juggling so many roles. You’re not just an employee, a mum, a partner; you’re a *leader*. You’re designing your own future, creating your own opportunities, & building a legacy not just for yourself but for your family.
This isn’t to say it’s easy. Building a business, especially while raising a family, has its own unique challenges. I know. I’m living it! It’s a constant dance.
* Managing the chaos of school runs.
* Finding those precious pockets of focused work time amidst the daily juggle.
* Navigating the constant interruptions (my two Miniature Pinschers, Cappuccino & Espresso, are experts at this!).
It’s all part of the rich tapestry of working from home as a mum & pet owner, right? Finding ways to navigate these joyful interruptions is key. One thing that’s helped me immensely is implementing clear systems & boundaries, which is a core part of our *Flow* pillar here at Femmeprenista. Even something as simple as scheduling dedicated “focus blocks” in my calendar (and sticking to them!) has made a world of difference. It’s about finding what works for *you* & your unique brand of beautiful chaos.
But even amidst the challenges, there’s a profound sense of freedom & fulfillment that comes from building something that is truly *yours*. You are in control. You get to make the decisions. You set the pace. And you get to design a return from maternity leave that works for *you* & your family. When I launched Femmeprenista, while still recovering from a C-section & deep in the early stages of my PhD, finding focused work time felt almost impossible. My youngest two were constantly demanding attention (rightfully so!), and I remember thinking, “How am I going to do this?” I started small, carving out 30-minute work sprints during nap times, gradually building up my capacity & implementing systems as the business grew. It was a messy, imperfect process, but it taught me the power of starting small, taking ownership, & focusing on consistent progress, even when life throws curveballs.
Building Your Bridge: From Corporate Constraints to Entrepreneurial Freedom
So, how do you make this shift? How do you move from the constraints of corporate life to the freedom of entrepreneurship?
It starts with that core mindset shift we discussed. Taking ownership. Recognizing that your journey, your pace, is valid. And that your skills & experiences, honed in the corporate world, are valuable assets. Rory Sutherland, a behavioral scientist and marketing expert, believes that “Stories are the PDF files of human information.” What he means is that people connect with narratives, with stories that make data and facts relatable. Your entrepreneurial story is unique to you, and it’s a powerful way to connect with potential clients. It’s your narrative, your ‘why,’ that sets you apart and makes your brand resonate.
From there, it’s about building your bridge. This is where Femmeprenista’s Launch Programme can be incredibly supportive. It provides structured guidance, community support, & the practical tools to turn your entrepreneurial vision into a reality.
It can feel lonely, right? Especially when you’re navigating so much. That’s why finding your tribe is so important. Join our free Femme:Connect community for support, shared learning, & a whole lot of “I get it!” moments from other women on this journey.

Remember, returning from maternity leave doesn’t have to mean returning to a diminished version of yourself. It can be a powerful opportunity to redefine your professional identity, reclaim your narrative, & design an ascent that truly reflects your evolving ambitions & values.
What’s one small, smart step you can take today to own your progress?
* What are three business ideas that genuinely excite you? Brainstorm now & jot them down. Don’t overthink it; just let the ideas flow.
* What’s one skill you’ve honed in your corporate role that could be valuable in your own business? Consider the tasks you enjoyed, excelled at, or that brought you recognition.
* Do you crave connection & support? Join a supportive community like Femme:Connect to connect with other entrepreneurial mums who understand the journey.

P.S. Remember, the entrepreneurial journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small wins, embrace the chaos, & keep moving forward. You’ve got this! As Jim Rohn says, “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.”
