The Beautiful Mess: Juggling Entrepreneurship & Motherhood (Without Losing Your Mind)

Let’s be honest, shall we? How many times have you scrolled through Instagram, admiring those perfectly curated feeds of entrepreneurs who seem to effortlessly juggle a thriving business with a picture-perfect family life? Me too! And then, like, five seconds later, your toddler throws a full-blown tantrum because you cut their sandwich the wrong way, the puppy decides your laptop cable is a chew toy, & your meticulously planned work schedule goes up in flames. Sound familiar? Thought so! This post is for all you entrepreneurs in the first year of your businesses.

The truth is, the reality of balancing entrepreneurship & motherhood is often a beautiful, messy, & chaotic whirlwind. It’s a far cry from the polished image we often see online. And it can feel incredibly isolating when you’re knee-deep in nappies & deadlines, wondering how everyone else seems to be nailing it. But let me tell you a secret: they’re not. Or at least, not all the time. We all experience those “one eyeliner on because I’m cleaning yoghurt off the ceiling” kind of mornings. I know I’ve definitely been there. Just the other day, I was about to start a live training session when my infant son decided to showcase his newfound artistic talent – using a permanent marker on the freshly painted wall behind me. I felt a surge of panic, followed by a strange sense of amusement – talk about a “cringe, but true” moment! It’s moments like these that remind me (and hopefully you!) that perfection is a myth. What I’ve learned – and what keeps me grounded – is that it’s not about aiming for an impossible “balance,” but about integrating the different parts of our lives, messy bits and all.

This post is for you – the amazing woman juggling the double hustle, navigating the “messy middle” that’s rarely showcased. It’s about validating your experience, offering encouragement, & providing practical mindset shifts to navigate the chaos with more resilience, & maybe even a little humour. Because who says we can’t laugh at the absurdity of it all while we’re building our empires? I know I do. And, honestly, what else can you do sometimes?!

Embracing the Imperfect Juggle: It’s Not About Balance, It’s About Integration

Forget the myth of perfect “work-life balance.” Let’s get real. With the school holidays stretching out like an eternity (12–13 weeks a year, anyone?), partners who travel for work (or have their own intense schedules!), & the never-ending mental load of motherhood, “balance” often feels like a fantasy.

What we’re aiming for isn’t balance, it’s integration. It’s about weaving the different strands of our lives together, acknowledging that some days the business thread will be dominant, & other days the family thread will take centre stage. & sometimes, all the threads get tangled in a glorious, colourful knot. That’s okay. That’s real life. It’s my life, too. I get it. It’s all about the beautiful chaos. There are days when I feel like a superhero, managing to tick off everything on my to-do list while simultaneously diffusing sibling squabbles & preventing my puppy, Espresso, from turning the house into a chew-toy testing ground. & then there are those days where I feel like I’m trapped in a never-ending episode of “Groundhog Day,” where spilled juice, homework emergencies, & tech glitches seem to conspire against any semblance of productivity.

One of the most transformative things I’ve learned – & something I explore in my ongoing PhD research – is the incredible power of personal responsibility. My research focuses on Black female entrepreneurship, but the principles of resilience, resourcefulness, and overcoming challenges apply to all women in business. It’s so easy to get caught in the “it’s the system’s fault” narrative. & while systemic challenges certainly exist (trust me, I know, being a Millennial juggling all this), our response to those challenges is what truly defines our path. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how to work within it, around it, or maybe even create a whole new system of our own? This reminds me of something Tony Robbins often says: “It’s not knowing what to do, it’s doing what you know.” We all have untapped potential – it’s about taking ownership and putting that knowledge into action.

Mindset Shifts for the Mum-Boss: Owning Your Chaos

Here’s the thing: The entrepreneurial journey is a rollercoaster, even without the added layer of motherhood. Add in kids, & it becomes a rollercoaster ride while simultaneously juggling flaming torches & trying to answer emails. But what if, instead of seeing this as a burden, we saw it as a superpower? A testament to our incredible resilience, adaptability, & ability to multitask like bosses? Building a rock-solid mindset is the first step. Remember, your mindset is your most powerful tool. This is the core of what we call FOCUS in the Business Flourish Framework.

Here are a few mindset shifts that have helped me, & the women I coach, navigate this exhilarating ride:

* **Embrace the Mess:** Let go of the need for everything to be perfect. The house might be a bit messier, the schedule a bit more flexible, & your appearance some days… well, let’s just say “functional” (anyone else rocking the messy bun & dry shampoo?). That’s okay. You’re building an empire, not a show home. My own entrepreneurial journey, balancing a PhD & four kids, has shown me that progress, not perfection, is the key.

* **Prioritize Ruthlessly:** You simply cannot do everything. So what absolutely MUST be done today? What can be delegated, automated, or ditched altogether? This is where having solid systems – ideally enhanced with some smart AI tools – becomes essential. Implement efficient systems, perhaps leveraging smart AI tools like Trello for project management or a CRM to automate client communications, to truly streamline your processes, & delegate or ditch what’s not serving you.

* **Find Your Tribe:** The entrepreneurial journey can be lonely, especially when you’re also navigating motherhood. Connecting with other women who understand the unique challenges of this dual hustle is invaluable. Our Femme:Connect Community isn’t just a Facebook group; it’s a lifeline, a space for shared experiences, practical tips on navigating those 12-13 weeks of school holidays, masterclasses on attracting clients that actually fit into a busy mum’s schedule, finding accountability partners, getting access to time-saving templates, and so much more. It’s a safe, supportive space where you can ask “silly” questions (we’ve all been there!), share your wins, & connect with women who truly get it.

* **Celebrate Your Wins (No Matter How Small):** Did you manage to finish that proposal while the kids were having screen time? Did you finally automate your email sequence? Did you sneak in a 10-minute meditation? Celebrate it! These small wins are proof that you’re moving forward, even if it’s not always a straight line. This speaks to our core value of Action within the Business Flourish Framework.

From Overwhelm to Empowerment: Your Action Checklist

Now for the practical stuff. Because mindset shifts are great, but they need to be backed by actionable strategies. Here’s your checklist for taming the chaos:

* **Time Blocking Like a Boss (Family Time Included):**

* Schedule “Family Time” blocks in your calendar, treating them as non-negotiable appointments.

* Color-code these blocks to visually distinguish them from work tasks.

* Be fully present during these times, putting away devices and focusing on connecting with your loved ones.

* **The Power of “No” (and “Not Now”):**

* Identify activities or commitments that drain your energy or don’t align with your goals.

* Practice politely but firmly declining these requests, using phrases like, “Thank you for thinking of me, but I’m not taking on any new projects right now” or “That sounds interesting, but it’s not a priority for me at the moment.”

* Remember that saying “no” to one thing frees up space to say “yes” to something that truly matters.

* **Outsource Strategically (Guilt-Free):**

* Create a list of tasks you can delegate, such as cleaning, administrative work, social media management, or even grocery shopping.

* Research virtual assistants, freelancers, or local service providers who can handle these tasks.

* Set a budget for outsourcing and track the return on investment in terms of time saved and increased productivity.

* **Leverage Tech (Without Becoming Overwhelmed):**

* Choose one tech tool at a time to learn and implement. Focus on mastering its core functionalities before adding more to your workflow.

* Consider tools for scheduling (Calendly), project management (Trello, Asana), communication (Slack, email automation), social media management (Buffer, Hootsuite), or AI-powered content creation (Jasper, Copy.ai).

* Seek support or training if needed to ensure you’re using these tools effectively and efficiently.

The Importance of Self-Care (Because You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup)

This is a big one. As mothers & entrepreneurs, we often put ourselves last. But we can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritizing your well-being isn’t selfish, it’s essential. What energises you? A quiet cuppa in the morning? A 20-minute yoga session? A walk in nature? Make it a non-negotiable part of your routine. Even small pockets of self-care can make a world of difference. When I was burning the candle at both ends, juggling my MBA at Cranfield, a nine-month-old, & navigating some serious personal challenges, I realised that even five minutes of mindfulness could shift my energy and help me approach the day with more resilience. This experience solidified my belief that prioritizing well-being isn’t a luxury; it’s a non-negotiable for any entrepreneur, especially for mums. This is the FUEL in our Business Flourish Framework – it’s so important. It’s about nurturing your well-being so you can sustain the energy required for this incredible dual hustle. Remember, a thriving business needs a thriving you.

You’ve Got This (Seriously)

Building a business & raising a family simultaneously is not easy. It’s a marathon, not a sprint (though some days it feels more like a hurdle race). There will be tears, tantrums, & tech meltdowns. But you’ve got this. Embrace the beautiful mess, find strength in your shared experience, & remember you are not alone. We’re all in this together. One particularly challenging week, I found myself juggling deadlines, a sick toddler, & a partner who was away on a business trip. I felt completely overwhelmed, like I was drowning in a sea of to-do lists & unmet expectations. In that moment, I almost gave up. But then I remembered my “why” – the vision I had for my family and the women I serve. I reached out to my own mentor, took a deep breath, & broke down the mountain of tasks into manageable steps. I prioritized ruthlessly, delegated what I could, & focused on one thing at a time. I even managed to sneak in a quick walk in nature to clear my head. Slowly but surely, I regained control, not by magically eliminating the chaos, but by choosing to respond to it with intention and self-compassion. Remember, even when it feels like the wheels are about to fall off, taking ownership of your actions and focusing on solutions will always move you forward.
