Business Attire Illusion: Rocking Comfort & Confidence
From Boardroom to Bedroom: Rocking the “Business Attire Illusion” (and Why It’s Not Laziness!)
Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! Ever found yourself presenting a killer pitch on a Google Meet call, all polished professionalism from the waist up, while secretly rocking pyjama bottoms & fluffy slippers below? Don’t worry, you’re in good company! The “business attire illusion” is our little secret, a perfectly acceptable – nay, *brilliant* – adaptation in the beautiful chaos of being a female entrepreneur & often a mum too.
It’s not about laziness, darling. It’s about strategic comfort & maximum efficiency in a world where we’re juggling ALL the things. This post is a celebration of that relatable reality. We’re going to reframe this “illusion” not as a compromise, but as a smart move in the game of work-life integration. I’ll be sharing some practical tips to rock this flexible work style while maintaining professionalism & getting things *done*. Because let’s face it, nobody gets a medal for being the most uncomfortable entrepreneur.
The Illusion is Real (and Totally Understandable)
I get it. I *really* get it. The struggle is REAL. Honestly, some days, just getting dressed at *all* feels like a win. Juggling a PhD while recovering from my fourth C-section, wrangling a toddler who’s decided the dog’s water bowl is a swimming pool, & simultaneously trying to run a business? Just this morning, my two-year-old decided my laptop was the perfect canvas for her peanut butter finger-painting masterpiece, right before a client call. Talk about a quick-fire lesson in crisis management! My teenage daughter sometimes takes longer to agonise over her outfit for school than it would’ve taken me to complete an entire client project, & I realised her outfit choice had more market research behind it than my latest campaign.
So, if you’re presenting your best self to the world – polished, professional, & ready to conquer – while enjoying the comfort of your favourite slippers, know this: It’s okay. You’re not alone. You’re not lazy. You’re a strategic genius adapting to a world that demands we be everything, everywhere, all at once. & let’s face it, we Millennials are particularly adept at adapting, aren’t we? We’ve had to be. We’re the generation that’s been told we can have it all, while simultaneously facing stagnant wages, sky-high living costs, & the ever-present pressure to be the “perfect” mum, partner, friend, *&* entrepreneur. Honestly, I wonder if I’d ever even have started down this entrepreneurial path if it wasn’t for seeing those pressures & thinking, “There *has* to be a smarter, more sustainable way.” Reflections informed by my ongoing research into women’s entrepreneurship often highlight this very issue – the pressures & barriers that make many women seek out alternative, autonomous paths. My own journey, balancing four kids, a PhD, & running Femmeprenista, constantly reinforces this. It’s a slower, more challenging path, but taking ownership of it is the non-negotiable core. If I don’t get there, that’s on me. Not the system, not the kids, me.
I remember being told in a corporate job (yes, I was there once too!) that we were all “replaceable.” That didn’t exactly inspire loyalty, did it? It made me crave something more, something that was *mine*, where my contributions were valued & where my voice mattered. Building my own business, even with all the beautiful chaos it brings, gives me that ownership. So, if a little sartorial flexibility helps me navigate this demanding but incredibly fulfilling journey, I’m embracing it wholeheartedly.
Redefining Professionalism (on Our Terms)
Professionalism isn’t just about a suit & heels anymore. It’s about delivering excellence, showing up for your clients, & building a business that makes a genuine impact. As Rory Sutherland says, remember, value can be created in the mind every bit as much as it can be created in the factory!
Let’s be honest, those restrictive corporate policies never really made sense to me anyway.
* Those kids are off from school 12-13 weeks a year – does *anyone* get three months’ holiday in a typical corporate job? Nope.
* Flexibility is essential, especially when you’re a mum navigating the realities of family life.
One minute you’re deep in thought, strategizing your next marketing campaign, & the next you’re refereeing a pillow fight between your six-year-old & the dog. Ever tried to record a podcast with Espresso, my hyperactive Miniature Pinscher, using my office chair as a chew toy? It’s all part of the fun, right?! Trust me, I’ve been there, frantically cleaning mystery stains off the carpet while trying to get ready for a call, only to emerge with one eyeliner on because time ran out.
It’s not ideal, is it? But it’s real life. That “caster oil on the carpet” morning is forever etched in my memory! These are the moments that remind you that you’re not just a CEO; you’re a mum, a pet owner, navigating this beautiful, chaotic tapestry of life.
So, let’s redefine professionalism on our terms, shall we? Let’s embrace the power of working smart, not just hard. Focus, one of the pillars of our Business Flourish Framework, is about clarity & resilience, not just pushing harder. It’s about finding those psychological moonshots, like Rory Sutherland talks about—small changes that create a big difference.
Practical Tips for Rocking the Illusion (& Getting Things Done)
Here are some practical tips to maximise productivity & maintain professionalism within this flexible work style:
* **Dedicated Workspace (Even if it’s a Corner):** Create a dedicated work zone, even if it’s just a corner of your bedroom. This helps mentally separate “work” from “relaxation.” Trust me, it makes a world of difference. Having a dedicated space, even if it’s small, helps me stay in ‘Flow’ – that state of focused action. My six-year-old is much less likely to treat my laptop as a coloring book if it’s in my designated work area! Building your work zone is about so much more than aesthetics. As a female entrepreneur, carving out your own space, literally & metaphorically, is crucial. You’re not just a mum or a partner; you’re a business owner. This is where *you* reign supreme. This little kingdom of productivity helps you tap into that “Big Deal Energy” that Adrienne Weimer champions – it’s a space where you own your expertise and your impact.
* **Schedule Like a Boss:** Time blocking is your best friend. I know, I know – it sounds boring, right? I used to be terrible at this. I’d start my day with a grand plan to achieve everything, & somehow, by mid-afternoon, I’d be knee-deep in laundry & wondering where the day went. It was a classic case of needing to improve my ‘Flow,’ & building a stronger system for managing my time & energy.
* Schedule focused work blocks.
* Schedule client calls.
* Importantly, schedule family time.
Treat your schedule as sacred. Creating systems helps manage everything & prevents your day from becoming a fire drill. When I was doing my MBA while wrangling my toddler, I didn’t have time for fire drills! A structured schedule was the only way I could keep my head above water. Using tools like Trello or Asana can transform your ‘Flow’ into a powerhouse of productivity. Check out this post for more on how to time block like a boss!
* **Dress for the Task (Not the Illusion):** While pyjama bottoms are perfectly acceptable for focused work, dress the part for client calls or video meetings. A professional top & neat hair can make all the difference in how you present yourself (& how you feel!). I’m not suggesting you abandon the comfy bottoms – just have a professional top ready to swap in when needed! It’s a simple but game-changing trick. This helps me shift my mindset & tap into that “Big Deal Energy” that Adrienne Weimer talks about. It’s a way of telling myself, “I’m showing up as the CEO of my life & business,” even if my slippers say otherwise!
* **Embrace Tech (& AI!):** Leverage technology to streamline your workflow. Think scheduling tools, project management software, & yes, the magic of AI. Fusion, the integration of AI, is key. We can’t do it all alone, ladies. This isn’t about working harder, it’s about working *smarter*. Remember the “Uber map” anecdote? It wasn’t about making taxis arrive faster; it was about giving riders real-time information, which reduced the *anxiety* of waiting. You can read more about this brilliant example of a “psychological moonshot” here: [Link to relevant article about the Uber map]. That’s the sort of psychological moonshot we’re talking about when we leverage AI – making everything smoother, more efficient, & less overwhelming. Think of AI as your intelligent assistant, helping you automate those repetitive tasks, like scheduling social media posts, managing your email inbox, even generating initial drafts of blog posts (like this one!). My personal workaholic uses tools like Jasper.ai to help automate content creation for Thrivology Digital, which frees up so much time & energy. * **Prioritize Well-being (Fuel Up!):** Don’t forget to fuel your body & mind. This is about Fuel – the wellbeing pillar of our framework. Schedule regular breaks, get outside, move your body, & prioritize those precious moments of self-care, even if they’re just five minutes of quiet meditation with a cuppa. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. My partner used to tease me when I called it our “working film night” when he had his laptop open throughout – true couple time is essential for sanity when you’re running a business together, or you risk becoming glorified roommates! Full disclosure? I recently completely ignored my own advice & skipped self-care for a whole week. Let me tell you, the burnout was REAL. It was a harsh reminder that ‘Fuel’ isn’t a luxury, it’s essential for sustainable high performance. Ready to make self-care a priority? * **Own Your Choice:** Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about choosing a work style that works for *you*. This is *your* business, *your* life, *your* rules (within reason, of course!).
1. Take a moment now & briefly write down your “why.” What are you building this business *for*? Is it about spending more quality time with your kids, having the financial freedom to travel, making a meaningful impact in your industry? Whatever it is, get clear on it. This is your North Star.
2. Now, identify *one concrete boundary* you will set this week to honor that “why.” This could be turning off notifications after a certain time, scheduling dedicated “family time” in your calendar, or simply saying “no” to a commitment that doesn’t align with your core values.
Remember, you’re building this for a reason – what’s your “why”? Keep that front & centre. My “why” is to have the financial freedom & time to be with my children & create opportunities for them, & a big part of that is actively challenging the idea that success has to look like one thing. One of my earliest ventures, Nisbett & George, taught me so much about the realities of juggling motherhood & entrepreneurship – & the critical importance of building a business that truly works for your life.
