“Mummy, Watch This!”: How Interruptions Fuel My Entrepreneurial Fire (and Probably Yours Too!)

Okay, let’s be honest, how many times have you been *right* in the middle of something crucial – crafting that perfect email, mapping out your next big launch, finally getting five minutes of focused work time – only to hear that familiar, high-pitched call of “Mummy, watch this!”? I know, you’re nodding along, probably with a wry smile & a slight shudder. Because as much as we adore our little cherubs (and teenagers, though sometimes the adoration is hidden *deep* down under layers of “I’m fine” and eye-rolls), these constant interruptions can feel like a major spanner in the works of our entrepreneurial dreams.

It’s a universal experience, isn’t it? You’re on a Google Meet call, trying to maintain that professional facade while your toddler is in the background demonstrating their newly acquired talent for stacking (and subsequently demolishing) towers of building blocks. Or maybe you’re finally getting into a state of flow, words pouring onto the page as you write your next blog post, only for your school-aged daughter to burst in, proudly brandishing a drawing of a unicorn that looks suspiciously like a multi-coloured llama.

I’ve been there, trust me. More times than I can count. There was this one time I was *this* close to finalizing a crucial proposal for a potential dream client, the kind of proposal that could really take Femmeprenista to the next level, and my infant son decided it was the perfect moment to… well, let’s just say there was a bit of a baby-related mishap that required an immediate clean-up and a quick change of clothes (for both of us!). It definitely wasn’t the ‘polished professional’ image I was aiming for, but hey, such is the life of a mumpreneur – I mean, entrepreneur! And it’s not just the little ones. My teenage daughter has a knack for choosing the exact moment I’m about to hit “send” on an important email to ask where her favourite jumper is. It’s like they have a sixth sense for disrupting productivity, a radar tuned to the frequency of focused thought. Sound familiar? Thought so!

It’s easy to feel frustrated, even resentful, in those moments. To think, “If only I had uninterrupted time, I could *finally* achieve X.” But what if I told you that those very interruptions, those “Mummy, watch this!” moments, can actually be a source of strength, a secret weapon in our entrepreneurial arsenal? Intrigued? Read on!

Finding the Gold in the Glitter Glue: Reframing the Interruptions

One of the biggest mindset shifts I made on my entrepreneurial journey (and one I help my clients make too) was to reframe these constant interruptions not as obstacles, but as opportunities. I’ll admit, it wasn’t an easy shift. It still isn’t, if I’m being totally honest. Even now, after integrating all these mindset principles into my life and business, I still have moments where I feel that familiar pang of resentment when my flow is broken. The key, I’ve learned, is to recognize that feeling, acknowledge it without judgment (it’s okay to not be okay, right?), and then gently guide myself back to gratitude. It’s an ongoing practice, this whole “finding the balance” thing, not a destination.

There were days, weeks even, where I let the frustration get the better of me. I remember one particularly challenging week where every single attempt at focused work was derailed by a combination of toddler tantrums, puppy shenanigans (Espresso, our Miniature Pinscher, can be a *handful*), and teenage angst. I ended the week feeling defeated, like I was failing both as a mum and as a CEO. It was only when I realized I was operating from a “To Me (Victimhood)” level of consciousness, externalizing responsibility instead of taking ownership of my own energy & focus, and not fully leveraging my Focus, Fuel and Flow that I was able to shift my perspective and truly embrace the power of these interruptions. Opportunities for what, you ask?

* **Reconnecting with Your “Why”:** Let’s face it, the entrepreneurial path can be a rollercoaster. There are days when self-doubt creeps in, when imposter syndrome whispers in your ear, when you question if you’re even cut out for this whole “running a business” thing. But then, your little one runs in, beaming, eager to show you their latest creation – a lopsided Lego castle, a drawing of your family that looks like a group of friendly aliens, a dance routine that defies the laws of physics – and in that instant, you remember why you’re doing this. You’re building a business that allows you to be present for these moments, a business that gives you the flexibility to witness those glitter-glue masterpieces being born. This is your “why” made tangible. I am grateful for where we are… four beautiful, wonderful kids… a roof over our heads! But, does that mean that I don’t want more for my kids? Absolutely, I want more – a richer life, more experiences, the freedom to create memories together – that’s why I’m building this business! It’s about financial freedom & legacy, not just surviving, but truly thriving.

* **Actionable Takeaway:** Take five minutes right now to write down your “why.” What are you building this business *for*? Keep this somewhere visible, so you can reconnect with it on those tough days. Use a visualization technique, inspired by José Silva’s work, to vividly imagine the life this business is creating for you and your family. Think about: What will this business enable you to DO? What will it enable you to BE? How will it impact your family’s life?

Chic line art of a mumpreneur integrating work and family life; pastel purple on the success target | Femmeprenista

* **Fueling Your Creativity:** Kids see the world differently. They haven’t yet learned to censor their imaginations, to dismiss “silly” ideas. Their unfiltered creativity can be incredibly inspiring. I’ve had some of my best business ideas – a fresh marketing angle, a new programme concept – sparked by something my children said or did. For instance, when my eldest was explaining her understanding of social dynamics at school, it sparked an idea for a new lead magnet targeted at solopreneurs struggling to build community – a “Find Your Tribe” checklist that breaks down the process of creating meaningful connections in a simple, actionable way. Those interruptions can jolt you out of a rut, forcing you to look at things from a fresh, often hilarious, perspective. My school-aged daughter, for instance, recently inspired a whole new module in my Spark Program on simplifying complex ideas for your audience. She explained fractions to me using pizza slices (who knew?!), and it clicked – sometimes, the simplest explanations are the most effective. This reminds me of Rory Sutherland’s “psychological moonshots” – small, creative shifts that yield big results. It’s not about logic, it’s about understanding the human element.

* **Actionable Takeaway:** The next time you’re stuck on a problem, ask a child in your life (or borrow one from a friend!) to explain it to you. Their fresh perspective might surprise you. Or try explaining your business idea to them. If they can’t understand it, your target audience probably can’t either.

* **Sharpening Your Focus:** I know, this might sound counterintuitive. How can constant interruptions improve focus? Well, think about it. When you know your focused work time is limited, you become incredibly efficient. You learn to prioritize, to eliminate distractions (beyond the small human variety, of course), to make every minute count. This kind of focused intensity is a superpower. When I finally sit down at my desk, after the morning rush of school runs and spilled cereal, it’s like my brain goes into hyperdrive. It’s a classic example of constraint breeding creativity. It’s a Flow pillar principle – working smarter, not just harder, by making the most of the time you have. And the Fusion element – integrating smart tools and systems to support that Flow – becomes even more critical when time is precious.

* **Actionable Takeaway:** Try the Pomodoro Technique. Set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-minute break. You’ll be amazed at how much you can achieve when you know there’s a “Mummy, watch this!” break just around the corner. During your 5-minute break, fully engage with your little ones, then get back to your focused work. Use a tool like Trello or Asana to track your Pomodoro sessions and tasks.

* **Building Resilience:** Motherhood is a masterclass in resilience. You learn to adapt, to roll with the punches, to find solutions in the midst of chaos. And these skills are invaluable for any entrepreneur. The ability to handle unexpected challenges, to pivot when things don’t go as planned, to get back up after a setback – these are the hallmarks of a resilient entrepreneur. And let’s face it, if you can handle a toddler meltdown in Tesco & still manage to get the grocery shopping done, you can handle pretty much anything the business world throws at you. Hey, as Roxie Nafousi says, “Every time you overcome a test you make a decision that is in alignment with your future self!” It’s all about Fuel – your inner strength and wellbeing.

* **Actionable Takeaway:** Think about a recent challenge you overcame, either in business or motherhood. Write down the specific steps you took, the mindset you adopted, and the lesson you learned. Here are some prompts to help you: What was the specific challenge? What were my initial thoughts & feelings? What actions did I take? What was the outcome? What did I learn from this experience? This is your resilience playbook. Refer to it when facing future hurdles.

From Guilt to Gratitude: Embracing the Beautiful Chaos

So, the next time you hear that “Mummy, watch this!” and feel that familiar twinge of frustration (or maybe a full-blown internal scream), take a deep breath. Remind yourself that these interruptions are not a sign that you’re failing as an entrepreneur or as a mother. They are a reminder of the beautiful, messy, incredibly rewarding reality of being a woman who is building a business while raising a family. It’s a juggle, no doubt. But it’s a juggle that can lead to a life of profound richness, flexibility, & impact. See, this is why I created Femmeprenista – to help women thrive in the beautiful chaos!
