Reclaim Time Energy: Femmeprenista's Guide to Work-Life Balance

The “Magic Touch” Myth: Reclaiming Your Time & Energy as a Femmeprenista (Scaling Leader)

Let’s be honest, loves. How many times have you heard, “You just have a magic touch!” when it comes to all things family-related? It sounds like a compliment, right? A sweet little nod to your amazing mum skills. But what if that “magic touch” is actually a cleverly disguised trap, subtly reinforcing the idea that you’re the default parent for absolutely everything kid-related, even in a household that’s supposed to be all about equality?

I’ve been there. Four kids, a PhD, running multiple businesses – trust me, I know the intense juggle. And let me tell you, that “magic touch” can start to feel less like a superpower and more like an invisible chain, holding you back from your entrepreneurial dreams. Ever feel like you’re slowly morphing into the family PA, rather than the CEO of your own life? Thought so!

You know that feeling, right? Like you’re the only one who can pack the perfect lunchbox, remember everyone’s extracurricular schedule, soothe a tantrum with just the right cuddle, or magically transform a chaotic bedroom into something resembling order. And while it’s lovely to feel needed (and let’s face it, we mums are pros at multitasking!), this dynamic can seriously hinder your ability to focus on growing your business & maximizing your time & energy.

It’s like this: you’re trying to map out your next big launch, and you’re constantly interrupted – the baby needs a nappy change, the toddler has decided the dog’s water bowl is a new swimming pool, the teenager needs help finding their “absolutely essential” trainers (that you swear you saw them wearing yesterday), and my husband’s asking where his favourite shirt is (even though it’s literally staring him in the face). Sound familiar? It’s exhausting! And it creates this subtle pressure – this almost unconscious belief – that your family needs you *more* than your business does. I remember one morning, trying to get ready for an important strategy session, only for my two-year-old to decide my laptop was a drum! Another time, *I was in the middle of prepping our pitch deck for seed funding* when Espresso, our hyper puppy, decided to redecorate the living room with the contents of the recycling bin. Talk about a time & energy vortex! Trust me, the “beautiful chaos” is real, but it needs boundaries. (Modern Motherhood & The Juggle)

This isn’t about blaming anyone. It’s about recognizing a pattern that can creep into even the most well-intentioned, equality-driven families. It’s about understanding how this “indispensability” narrative, often presented as praise, can reinforce limiting beliefs about your role, your time, & your potential. My ongoing PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship often reveals how deeply these societal expectations can impact our ability to prioritize our own ambitions. *In my research, a recurring theme is the struggle many women face in balancing the societal expectation of being the “primary caregiver” with their entrepreneurial drive.* As Adrieen Weriner says, “objections are just fear wearing a logical outfit” – so let’s unpack that fear and step into our power!

From “Magic Touch” to Strategic Delegation: Reclaiming Your Power & Time & Energy

So how do we break free from this “magic touch” trap and reclaim our time and energy to pursue our entrepreneurial dreams? It starts with a mindset shift. Remember, loves, you are not just a mum; you are a powerful, capable entrepreneur. And just like in business, strategic delegation & clear communication are key on the home front.

Here’s the thing: your “magic touch” isn’t magic; it’s a set of highly valuable skills – planning, organizing, problem-solving, nurturing. And these skills are just as valuable in your business as they are at home. The key is to consciously apply them to both areas, creating systems and processes that empower everyone in the family to contribute. Seriously, if you’re not careful, you’ll end up being the glorified family PA!

Reframing the Narrative: It’s Not Magic, It’s Skill

Think about it this way: if you were running a team in your business, would you try to do everything yourself? Of course not! You’d delegate tasks, empower your team members, and create clear workflows. So why not apply the same principles to your family?

Here’s your 3-step action plan to reclaim your time & energy and ditch the “default mum” narrative:

1. **Schedule a 30-Minute Family Meeting This Week:** Talk to your partner and kids. Explain that you need their help to create a more balanced distribution of responsibilities. This isn’t about complaining; it’s about working together as a team. Open communication is essential, allowing you to channel your energy effectively. *Start by acknowledging everyone’s contributions and then gently explain how the current dynamic is impacting your ability to be fully present for both family and business. Perhaps create a simple agenda beforehand to keep the conversation focused. Most importantly, be open to hearing their perspectives and finding solutions together.* I’ll be honest, even after understanding the importance of this intellectually, I really struggled to implement it consistently. *There were times I’d schedule the meeting, only to cancel last minute because I felt overwhelmed and guilty, like I should just handle everything myself.* It’s a journey, loves, not a destination!

2. **Delegate 3 Tasks Today:** Assign age-appropriate tasks. Even young children can help with simple chores like putting their toys away. Teenagers can contribute more significantly, maybe by prepping dinner or doing laundry. And your partner? Well, let’s just say he’s perfectly capable of finding his own shirt (and packing a few lunchboxes while he’s at it!). Remember, delegation within the family, like in business, is about leveraging everyone’s strengths. It’s not about perfection; it’s about shared responsibility.

3. **Create One Shared Family System This Month:** Just like in your business, systems make everything run smoother. Create a family calendar, a chore chart, a shared online grocery list, or a meal plan. This month, focus on implementing just ONE. This takes the mental load off you and empowers everyone to know what’s expected. As I always say, “It’s the system that’s going to help us” when things get overwhelming. Even something as simple as a shared online calendar, where everyone inputs their appointments and commitments, can make a huge difference! This creates clarity and reduces the mental clutter.

You Are Worthy of Support (and Systems!)

This shift from “magic touch” to shared responsibility not only frees up your time & energy but also empowers your family. It teaches your kids valuable life skills and strengthens your partnership. It’s a win-win!

I know, I know. It’s easier said than done. These shifts can feel daunting, especially when you’re already juggling so much. But remember, loves, you are worthy of support, both in your business & at home. And creating a more balanced family dynamic is a crucial step towards achieving your entrepreneurial dreams. It’s about working smarter, not harder, in every area of your life.

It’s like that saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” If you’re constantly depleted, running on fumes, how can you possibly have the energy & focus to build the business you dream of? As female entrepreneurs, we’re often pulled in so many directions – kids, partners, business, personal growth – it’s easy to feel depleted. Prioritizing your wellbeing is essential for sustaining your entrepreneurial journey. This means setting boundaries, making time for self-care, & building support systems (like our Femme:Connect community!). Reclaiming your time & energy is not selfish; it’s essential.
