Focus for Female Entrepreneurs: Conquer Chaos & Find Flow
I’m still navigating all of this chaos as I write this!
Client Calls & Castor Oil Chaos: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Uninterrupted Focus (For Femmeprenistas in the Launch Stage)
Right, let’s be honest, how many of us have been there? There was this one time, pre-Femmeprenista, pre-PhD, when I was juggling a corporate job, two little ones, and a mountain of mom guilt, that I nearly broke down mid-client presentation because my toddler decided to stage a protest against naptime *during* my meticulously planned, “foolproof” conference call. It’s funny now, but back then? Overwhelm doesn’t even begin to cover it. My saviour? A glass of wine & a good cry after the kids were asleep, followed by a fierce “we’ve got this” pep talk in the mirror. You know that feeling, right? You’re not alone. You’re on a crucial client call, meticulously explaining your brilliant new strategy (while internally giving yourself a pat on the back for, you know, *attempting* that elusive work-life balance), and suddenly⊠chaos erupts. A toddler’s tantrum reaches operatic levels in the background, the dog decides the living room rug is the perfect chew toy, or your teenager bursts in needing “help” with something that absolutely cannot wait another five minutes.
Yep, that’s the beautiful chaos of being an entrepreneur, isnât it? Iâve been there more times than I can count. One particularly memorable incident involved my youngest discovering the joys of finger painting… with yoghurt, thankfully not peanut butter, on the freshly cleaned white sofa, just as I was starting a coaching call with a new client. I managed to maintain a veneer of professionalism (thank goodness for the mute button and the strategically placed throw pillows!), but inside, I was frantically Googling âemergency upholstery cleaningâ while trying to sound like I had it all together. It was a definite “cringe, but true” moment! Sound familiar? Thought so!
But hereâs the thing: these moments, while sometimes mortifying, are not a sign of weakness. They’re a testament to your resilience & resourcefulness. If you can navigate a client call while simultaneously averting a yoghurt-related disaster (or whatever flavour of mayhem your little ones & fur babies decide to unleash), you possess the superpowers needed to achieve truly remarkable things. Just imagine what you could accomplish with consistent, uninterrupted focus.
This isn’t about judging yourself or striving for some unattainable ideal of perfect work-life balance (because honestly, who has time for that?). It’s about acknowledging the very real entrepreneur juggle, finding ways to work smarter, not harder, and reframing these “interruptions” as proof of your incredible adaptability. It’s a rollercoaster, this entrepreneurial journey, isn’t it? Full of ups and downs, twists and turns. But we buckle up, we hold on tight, and we enjoy the ride.
Turning Chaos into Confidence: Reframing the Juggle for Female Entrepreneurs
Itâs so easy to get caught in the “I should be able to do it all” trap. Honestly, I’ve been there. I remember feeling so defeated after my fourth C-section, trying to wrap my head around PhD research while navigating the sleep-deprived fog of newborn life *and* the energetic demands of a toddler, all while trying to lay the foundations for Femmeprenista. It felt like I was constantly falling short, like I should be further along, faster, more “together.” Does this resonate? So many of the women I work with feel this pressure, especially in the early stages.
But here’s what I’ve learned (and what my ongoing research into womenâs entrepreneurshipâspecifically, the unique challenges faced by Black female founders in navigating systemic barriers and building sustainable businessesâis constantly reinforcing): your journey is *your* journey. There’s no right or wrong pace, especially when youâre building a business alongside significant personal commitments. My PhD research at the University of Hertfordshire has actually shown that nearly 70% of female founders cite “lack of time” as their biggest challenge, especially in the first two years (you can find more on this topic in reports from organizations like the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor). So, youâre not alone in feeling this time pressure! My own path, juggling four kids, a demanding business, and doctoral research, has been anything but linear. It’s been more of a winding country lane than a superhighway. It’s slower, definitely more scenic, and occasionally requires a pit stop to deal with unexpected potholes (like, you know, a rogue nappy explosion mid-Zoom call) or requires me to recalibrate my expectations for support. “If I don’t get there, that’s down to me,” is my motto, even if my path looks different from someone without these commitments. As Tony Robbins says, âThe only impossible journey is the one you never begin.â
So, instead of beating yourself up, how about we reframe this? Letâs celebrate the fact that youâre even attempting this incredible feat of building a business while raising tiny humans & managing all the other things life throws at you. That in itself is extraordinary. Those unexpected moments of chaos are not a sign youâre doing it wrong; theyâre a sign youâre doing it. Period. As Lisa Nichols so powerfully reminds us, âYou are the designer of your destiny. You are the author of your story.â Own it.
Creating Pockets of Power: Strategies for Uninterrupted Focus for Female Entrepreneurs
Now, let’s talk practical strategies. Because while embracing the beautiful chaos is important, itâs equally crucial to create those all-important pockets of uninterrupted focus where you can truly get into Flow. Think of it as designing your own personal productivity oasis â a sanctuary of strategic ‘doing’ amidst the beautiful chaos. Here are a few tried-and-true tips from my own entrepreneurial journey & the collective wisdom of the Femmeprenista community that have helped me (and countless other entrepreneurs) carve out those precious moments of clarity & momentum:
The following strategies are designed to help you take control of your time & maximize your productivity, even amidst the beautiful chaos of running a business & raising a family.
1. **The Power Hour:** Schedule at least one dedicated hour each day, ideally when the little ones are napping, at school, or happily immersed in their own world.
* During this Power Hour, turn off all notifications, silence your phone, & let your family know youâre unavailable. Use this time for high-impact tasks like outlining a new program or tackling that blog post draft.
2. **The Strategic Time Block:** This is for larger projects requiring deeper immersion.
* Block out 2-3 hour chunks in your calendar, just like you would for any important appointment. My partner & I use a shared, color-coded Google Calendar to avoid conflicts & ensure we both get dedicated focus time. This also prevents those “oh, I didn’t realize you had a call” moments. Remember, my partner is also juggling his PhD research alongside running Thrivology Digital, so coordinating our schedules is key.
3. **The “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” Strategy:** Create physical separation.
* If possible, designate a separate room as your “work zone” & close the door during focused work time. This can significantly reduce distractions, especially if you have little ones at home. Of course, this needs to be adapted depending on the ages & needs of your children. For example, with a toddler, I might set them up with a safe, engaging activity in a playpen within sight while I work nearby, whereas with my teenager, a closed door and clear communication about my work block usually suffices.
4. **The Tech Saviour:** Leverage AI & automation.
* Fusion, our strategic AI integration approach within the Business Flourish Framework, is all about using smart technology to work smarter, not harder. Tools like Calendly (for scheduling), Jasper.ai (for content creation), and email automation platforms can save you countless hours & free up your mental bandwidth for strategic thinking & client interaction.
5. **The Importance of Asking (and Accepting) Help:** Don’t be afraid to delegate or ask for support.
* Whether itâs a conversation with your partner about sharing household responsibilities, asking a family member for a few hours of childcare, or hiring a virtual assistant for administrative tasks, building a support system is essential for sustainable success. I remember when I finally admitted I couldn’t do everything myself & hired a virtual assistant to manage my social media scheduling & email marketing, it was like a huge weight lifted. Suddenly, I had time to breathe, focus on my core business activities, & actually be present with my kids without that constant nagging feeling of being overwhelmed.
From Surviving to Thriving: Building Your Support System as a Female Entrepreneur
One of the most powerful ways to navigate the entrepreneur juggle is to connect with other women who truly understand the unique challenges & joys of this path. It can be so easy to feel isolated when youâre trying to build a business alongside the demands of motherhood, family life, and all the other commitments we juggle as modern women. Youâre not alone! Whatâs one thing you find particularly challenging about the entrepreneur juggle? Share your experience below â letâs connect and support each other. Remember, building a successful business is not a sprint; it’s a marathon (often run in relay with your little ones, your fur babies, & all the other amazing people who make up your life’s team). It’s about finding your own rhythm, celebrating the small wins, and building a support system that empowers you to not just survive, but thrive. Because you deserve to build a business that fits your life, not the other way around.
