Reclaim Focus: Entrepreneur Mum Interruptions Survival Guide
“But I Was Just About To…” The Entrepreneur Mum’s Guide to Taming Interruptions
Right, let’s be honest, how many times have you uttered those fateful words, “But I was just about to…” before the beautiful chaos of motherhood descends, & your carefully planned work session vanishes like a mirage? You know, that split-second before your toddler decides the dog’s water bowl is a swimming pool, your teenager announces a DEFCON 1 level meltdown because their WiFi is down (the *horror!*), or the baby decides that projectile vomiting is the new black? Business coach for women? More like chief firefighter, right?
As an entrepreneur mum myself, trust me, I *get* it. I’ve been there, done that, and I’m pretty sure I’ve cleaned every imaginable substance off the carpet, from glitter glue to… well, let’s just say toddlers are full of surprises. It’s a beautiful chaos, absolutely, but beautiful chaos doesn’t pay the bills, build your brand, or help you hit those juicy financial goals. And let’s face it, that constant feeling of being interrupted, of being *behind*, can do a number on your productivity, your mindset, & let’s be real, your sanity. Especially when, like many of my Millennial peers, you’re juggling it all without the traditional family support network. It’s tough out there for a Millennial mum trying to build a business!
It’s so easy to fall into the “it’s the system” trap, to blame the never-ending demands of motherhood and the crazy cost of living for derailing our entrepreneurial dreams. Yes, as Millennials, we really did get the bad end of the stick – student debt, stagnant wages, houses costing a gazillion pounds… need I go on? But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can *navigate* it with grace, a whole lot less guilt, & a seriously strategic plan? Business coaching for female entrepreneurs is about empowering you to take control, not just complain about the hand you’ve been dealt.
Because guess what? You’re not alone. And you *can* reclaim your focus, even amidst the whirlwind.
Why Interruptions Hit Entrepreneur Mums *Hard*
Juggling the demands of a growing business while being the CEO of your household is no joke. It’s a constant dance between spreadsheets & snacks, marketing funnels & meltdowns. And for many of us, like myself, navigating this without extensive local family support adds another layer of complexity. My PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship constantly highlights this very real challenge of balancing multiple demanding roles, often without the traditional support structures. It’s a theme I’m deeply exploring, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about building a supportive community through Femmeprenista.
The constant context-switching – from deep work on your launch strategy to refereeing a sibling squabble, all within the same hour – is mentally & emotionally exhausting. It’s like trying to write a novel while simultaneously conducting a symphony orchestra, with the added challenge of occasionally having to stop mid-sentence to retrieve a runaway toddler who has decided the kitchen cabinets are a new climbing wall. And honestly, the soundtrack to my working life often involves a unique blend of Disney songs, puppy barks (Espresso, I’m looking at you!), and the occasional high-pitched shriek that only a two-year-old can produce. It’s a far cry from the quiet hum of the office, that’s for sure.
For the Scaling Leaders among you (you might also know this stage as “Amy-Type,” if you’ve been following my work on client avatar stages), with established businesses you’re actively scaling, these interruptions can feel even more frustrating. You’re at a stage where focused, strategic time is absolutely crucial, and those constant disruptions can feel like they’re actively holding you back.
Reclaiming Your Focus: Moving from Reactive to Proactive
So, how do we move beyond the reactive firefighting & create more order amidst the whirlwind? It’s not about becoming a productivity robot, but it *is* about being strategic & intentional with the time you have. It’s about shifting from a mentality of *reacting* to interruptions to *proactively* designing systems that minimise their impact & maximize your precious, focused work time. It’s about taking ownership, building smart, AI-enhanced systems (Fusion, my friends!), & nurturing a resilient mindset. It’s like that saying, “hard work beats intelligence when it’s *smart* work,” and trust me, as someone juggling four kids, a PhD, and a business, I know a thing or two about working smart! These principles are at the heart of the Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework (Focus, Flair, Flow, Fuel, and of course, Fusion), a holistic approach I developed based on my own entrepreneurial journey, my MBA from Cranfield, and everything I’m continuing to research during my PhD on female entrepreneurship. It’s already helped hundreds of women just like you find more Flow in their business (getting things done efficiently & effectively) and more Fuel in their tank (prioritizing wellbeing so you don’t burn out).

Practical Strategies for Taming the “Beautiful Chaos”:
Ready to ditch the overwhelm & reclaim your focus? Here are some practical strategies that have worked wonders for me and my clients:
1. Micro-Systems for Managing Interruptions
* **The “Pre-Planned Pivot”:** Before you sit down for a focused work session, anticipate potential interruptions & have a pre-planned pivot activity ready for your little ones. This could be a basket of special toys, a new colouring book, or even a pre-recorded video they love. What’s the one thing that will captivate them for a solid 20 minutes? That’s your pre-planned pivot. A little pre-planning can save you a whole lot of stress later. It’s like packing snacks for a long car journey – you know there will be “are we there yet?” moments, so you prepare.
* **The “Strategic Snack Stash”:** Hangry kids are interruption machines! A strategically placed stash of healthy snacks can prevent those “Mum, I’m hungry!” interruptions. Think fruit, veggie sticks, or yoghurt pouches. It’s about being proactive, not reactive.
* **The “Designated ‘Do Not Disturb’ Zone”:** If possible, designate a physical space in your home as your work zone. This can be a separate room with a closed door, or even a designated corner of a room. Even a specific chair or desk can signal to your family that when you’re in that spot, it’s focus time. This is your “office,” and it deserves respect, even if it’s also the kitchen table! Teaching your children (and partner!) to respect this space can help minimise unnecessary interruptions.
2. Time Blocking with a Mum Twist
* **The “Power Hour”:** Identify your most productive hour. This might be early morning, during nap time, or after bedtime. Protect this time fiercely – it’s *your* time to shine! I put mine in my calendar, just like any other important appointment.
* **The “Micro-Task Master”:** Break down large projects into smaller micro-tasks. This allows you to make progress even in shorter bursts of time. Instead of aiming for a three-hour uninterrupted block (which, let’s face it, is a unicorn in mum-land!), focus on what you *can* achieve in 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there. I learned this the hard way after missing my eldest’s school play because I got so caught up in a client project! Talk about a mum fail moment. It was devastating, but it taught me a huge lesson about prioritizing and being realistic about time.
* **The “Family Time Block”:** Schedule dedicated family time. This isn’t just good for your family; it’s good for your business. When you know you have dedicated time for your kids, it’s easier to focus on work when it’s work time. This could be an hour for games, reading, or simply chatting (and deciphering toddler-speak!).
3. Mindset Mastery: Reframing the Interruptions
* **The “Pause & Breathe” Practice:** When an interruption happens (and it will!), take a deep breath before reacting. This pause helps you respond with grace, not frustration. There have been countless times when I’ve felt that familiar wave of frustration rising – like the time my toddler decided to “paint” the living room wall with my favourite lipstick just as I was about to start a client call. It took everything in me to pause, breathe, and choose a response that didn’t involve screaming. It’s still a work in progress, but that little pause makes a world of difference.
* **The “Perspective Shift”:** Reframe interruptions as connection opportunities. Yes, it’s frustrating when you’re in the zone, but these little humans are your *why*. Trust me, they grow up so fast. One minute, you’re wiping yoghurt off their faces, the next they’re borrowing your car and complaining about your music taste!
* **The “Guilt-Free Zone”:** Let go of the guilt. You are doing your best. Building a business while raising a family is *hard*. Give yourself grace and celebrate the small wins.
