Espresso & Entrepreneurship: Navigating the Beautifully Chaotic ‘Zoomies’ of Your Business Journey with Humour & Unshakeable Resilience

Are you a female entrepreneur, juggling the demands of a growing business with the beautiful chaos of family life? [Sound familiar?] You’ve finally carved out a precious hour to focus on that game-changing strategy for your business. The kids are *sort of* occupied (you think), the tea is hot, & your laptop is open. And then… BAM! Life, in all its unpredictable glory, decides to throw a party. Maybe it’s the toddler deciding your important paperwork is the perfect canvas for their latest crayon masterpiece, or perhaps your teenage daughter suddenly needs advice on a life-altering friendship drama, *right now*.

Or, in my house, it’s often Espresso, our hyper-energetic Miniature Pinscher. One minute she’s snoozing peacefully, the next she’s a furry black-and-tan rocket, bouncing off the walls in a classic case of the “zoomies.” Her mum, Cappuccino, usually just watches with an air of “been there, done that, got the T-shirt, darling.” Honestly, some days, I feel more like Cappuccino than I’d care to admit when observing the whirlwind of my own life. [Honestly… it’s a rollercoaster, right?]

This, my lovely fellow female entrepreneurs, is what I call “Espresso & Entrepreneurship.” It’s that beautifully chaotic, high-energy, often hilarious, and utterly unpredictable dance we do every single day, especially when we’re also juggling motherhood. It’s the soundtrack of a beloved children’s TV show (currently Peppa Pig on repeat in our house!) playing during a vital planning session, or the realisation you’ve done the school run wearing one slipper & one actual shoe because the baby decided your makeup bag was a treasure chest to be emptied. These are the moments that make us human, & they are an undeniable part of the journey. Much like Espresso suddenly deciding to redecorate the living room with toilet paper, these moments can feel disruptive, but they’re also a reminder that life is happening *around* our businesses, not separate from them. This post is especially for Foundation Builders – those just starting out, validating your idea, or trying to secure those first few clients amidst the beautiful chaos.

The “Espresso Effect”: When Your Business Gets the Zoomies

Espresso’s zoomies are the perfect metaphor for this entrepreneurial life, aren’t they? Those sudden bursts of activity – a flood of new client enquiries after a quiet spell, or an unexpected PR opportunity that lands in your inbox. Then there are the unexpected turns – a supplier letting you down at the last minute, a vital piece of tech deciding to go on strike right before a launch, or even a global pandemic that forces us all to pivot faster than a Min Pin chasing its tail. [See…the unexpected “zoomies” never end, do they?]

I remember one morning, prepped for a crucial video call, only to have my six-year-old burst in, covered head-to-toe in what appeared to be blue paint (it was toothpaste, thankfully, but the initial shock!). Or the times I’ve been deep in thought, crafting what I hoped was a world-changing business idea, only for Espresso to decide that my carefully arranged notes on the floor looked suspiciously like a new, rather comfy, & entirely chewable bed. These are the moments that could make you want to scream into a pillow, or, as I’m learning, just laugh. [If you don’t laugh, you cry, right?]

The truth is, this entrepreneurial path, especially when you’re a mum, is rarely a straight, calm walk in the park. According to a recent study by [Link to credible source: https://www.guidantfinancial.com/blog/small-business-statistics/

women-owned-businesses] , female entrepreneurs with families juggle 60% more responsibilities than their male counterparts. It’s more like a thrilling, occasionally terrifying, off-road adventure with a slightly over-caffeinated puppy at the wheel. And if you’re nodding along thinking, “Yes, that’s my life!” then please know, you are absolutely not alone.

Riding the Waves: More Than Just Caffeine Required

So, how do we navigate these entrepreneurial zoomies without losing our sanity, our humour, or our vision? It takes more than a strong cup of coffee (though that certainly helps!). It takes unshakeable resilience, a hefty dose of self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace the beautiful chaos with open arms. [It’s all about the right perspective, isn’t it?]

Building that inner strength, that core of calm in the storm, is absolutely essential. It’s about cultivating a mindset that sees challenges not as roadblocks, but as detours that might even lead to a more scenic route. It’s about having such a clear vision for what you’re building that the daily whirlwinds can’t knock you too far off course. If my ‘Espresso moments’ resonate & you’re looking for a community & framework to help you find your own rhythm in the chaos, learn more about how we support female entrepreneurs on their unique paths.

And critically, it’s about taking personal responsibility. Not for the unexpected things that happen *to* us – Espresso will always have her zoomies – but for how we *respond* to them. That’s where our true power lies. As my coach, Lisa Nichols, always says, “You are the designer of your destiny. You are the author of your story.”

Taming the Tornado (Or At Least Learning to Dance With It)

While we can’t always predict the zoomies, we can develop strategies to ride them out with more grace and, dare I say, even a bit of joy. [Let’s dive in, shall we?]

1. Humour is Your Superpower

Honestly, some days if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Finding the humour in the absurdity – the toothpaste incidents, the slipper-shoe combo, the dog-eaten business plan – is a genuine survival tactic. It diffuses tension, gives you perspective, & reminds you that this perfectly imperfect journey is uniquely yours. It’s also proof you’re a human, just sayin’! For instance, just this week, I was leading a coaching call when Espresso decided my shoelaces looked like an excellent chew toy. The client & I had a good laugh, and it actually broke the ice!

2. Embrace Adaptive Strategies

Rigid plans are often the first casualty of the Espresso Effect. Instead, think about building flexibility into your business. This might mean having adaptable systems that can bend without breaking, or leveraging smart tools that can help manage some of the administrative whirlwinds, freeing up your mental energy for the bigger picture. For example, instead of scheduling back-to-back client calls, build in 15-minute buffer periods. This gives you a moment to breathe, address any urgent family needs, or simply grab a cup of tea before diving back in. Or leverage AI tools to automate your social media posting, so you’re not chained to your phone. It’s about finding a flow that works for your real life, not some Instagram-perfect ideal. [And seriously, who actually has time for perfection anyway?] One tool I swear by is Trello – it’s amazing for visually mapping out projects & easily shifting deadlines when, say, a kid’s suddenly sick.

3. Fiercely Protect Your Energy

This one is huge, especially for mums. We pour so much into our businesses & our families, it’s easy to run on empty. Learning to prioritise your well-being, even in tiny ways, isn’t selfish; it’s essential fuel. Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, a walk around the block (dodging Min Pin zoomies, perhaps!), or simply saying “no” to things that drain you, fiercely guard your energy. For instance, schedule “non-negotiable” blocks of time in your calendar for self-care – even if it’s just 30 minutes to read a book or take a bath. Treat it like a client appointment you can’t miss! Your business needs you to be energised, not exhausted. Building that unshakeable resilience often comes down to strengthening your mindset & fiercely protecting your energy so your business energises rather than drains you. As Lisa Nichols says, “Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer.” You can learn more about our holistic approach to business & life in the Business Flourish Framework.

4. Find Your Pack – You’re Not Alone

Knowing you’re not the only one trying to build an empire while simultaneously negotiating with a toddler over broccoli is incredibly powerful. I struggled with building a supportive network in the beginning because I thought I was “too busy” or “too much of an introvert” to reach out. Looking back, those were just excuses! I learned it’s not about attending hundreds of networking events, but about intentionally finding 2-3 women I truly connect with & making an effort to support each other. This might mean setting up regular virtual coffee chats, sharing your struggles & wins in a private online group, or even offering each other practical help with tasks. It’s about building genuine relationships, not just collecting contacts. Knowing you’re not alone in these chaotic moments is powerful. If you’re looking for that connection, our Femme:Connect community is a brilliant place to share your own ‘Espresso stories’ and find your people.

If you’re in the early stages & the entrepreneurial ‘zoomies’ feel more daunting than exhilarating, sometimes a bit of focused support can make all the difference. The Launch Programme is designed to help you find clarity & build a solid foundation amidst the chaos. Find out more about how the Launch Programme helps you set up essential systems here.

Own Your Beautifully Chaotic Journey

The entrepreneurial journey is rarely linear. It’s a series of sprints, stumbles, leaps, & occasional face-plants, all set to the unique soundtrack of your life. There will be days when you feel like you’re conquering the world, and days when finding matching socks feels like a monumental achievement. Both are valid.

The key is to embrace your unique path, “Espresso moments” & all. Find the joy in the beautiful chaos, cultivate that unshakeable resilience by owning your responses & choices, & never, ever forget the power of a good laugh. You’ve got this, zoomies & all. [As Simone Biles says, “I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles,” so embrace your unique path!]

So, tell me, what’s your most recent “Espresso moment” in your business? How do you navigate the beautiful chaos? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments below – let’s share the laughter & the wisdom! [It can feel lonely, right? Especially when you’re juggling so much.]

P.S. Remember, even on the days when it feels like Espresso has redecorated your entire office with shredded documents & your to-do list is laughing at you, you are making progress. Every chaotic step is still a step forward on your incredible journey. Keep going! You’re not just building a business, you’re building a life. As Paulo Coelho said, “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”
